3 Things Rumi Can Teach Us About Grief
How can I sell sorrow when you know it’s a blessing?
Persian mystical poet and Sufi saint Jalaluddin Rumi explains the pure love we can achieve beyond the ego when we allow ourselves to experience grief as a blessing.
Rumi writes:
I saw grief drinking a cup of sorrow and called out, “it tastes sweet, does it now?” “you’ve caught me,” grief answered, “and you’ve ruined my business; how can I sell sorrow when you know it’s a blessing?” ―JALALUDDIN RUMI (1207 -1273
The idea of what Rumi is trying to say here is that if we know sadness can be a good thing, then we won’t be scared of it.
Grief, sadness, those things aren’t particularly bad.
It’s like when you fall while learning to ride a bike, it hurts, but you get better because of it.
You realize, the pain and the losses aren’t just things to endure, they can teach you, strengthen you, and even bring unexpected growth.
So Instead of drowning in sadness, start to see the deeper meaning in your experiences.
